The tree species Aesculus glabra is commonly known as Ohio buckeye, American buckeye, or fetid buckeye. Glabra is one of 13–19 species of Aesculus also called horse chestnuts. It is native primarily to the Midwestern and lower Great Plains regions of the United States, extending southeast into the Nashville Basin. It is also found locally in the extreme southwest of Ontario, on Walpole Island in Lake St. Clair, and in isolated but large populations in the South (Adams County, Mississippi). It is a medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 15 to 25 meters (49 to 82 ft) tall.
I up-cycle a small piece of buckeye and some stainless steel. Buckeye came from a bigger piece that was used for a bangle by someone I know. He didn’t have use for small pieces and was about to burn them – Not with me being around :o) and an insert is made out of stainless steel almost 2mm thick. Colours are yellow, gray, blue and green. I only used Shellac to finish on the outside and natural resin to glue the SS core inside. First two photos show cross sections. There are 4 photos with “work in progress”. Most photos were taken under fluorescent light (except few photos on my finger in sunlight). Size is between T1/2 to U1/2 (10.25 US/Canadian size). Very unique timber ring.
